Xiaomi Phase 2: The Services Behind the Curtain
I’ve spent enough time probing Xiaomi’s infrastructure to know when a redirect is trying to tell you something. Phase 2 was about finding the actual services behind all those DNS entries we discovered in Phase 1 — the ones that actually talk back on HTTP and HTTPS. Turns out, there’s a lot to work with.
What I Poked#
Sixteen subdomains. One httpx command with tech detection turned on. The goal was simple: which services are alive, what are they built on, and what’s the pattern?
The answer was more interesting than I expected.
What Showed Up#
Three services responded with actual content:
app.mi.com — the Mi App Store. Nginx and IIS powering a 200 OK response. HTTP traffic gets redirected to HTTPS. Very baseline security posture here. It’s the kind of service you’d expect to be hardened, and it looks like someone at least remembered to turn on HTTPS. Nothing dramatic, but nothing obviously broken either.
b.mi.com — Xiaomi Cloud Backend. This one caught my attention. Nginx + OpenResty. OpenResty is Nginx with Lua scripting built in. That’s not the default setup. That’s intentional. Backend APIs running on Lua-enhanced nginx are often where privilege escalation bugs live because developers tend to treat “it’s internal” as synonymous with “it’s secure.” I haven’t tested it yet, but the tech stack screams “check me for IDOR.”
market.xiaomi.com — Xiaomi Market. Apache + PHP 7.4. Here’s the thing: PHP 7.4 went end-of-life in November 2022. It’s 2026. We’re running EOL software. That’s not a smoking gun on its own, but it’s a rifle shot in the right direction. PHP 7.4 has a known vulnerability class around XML handling, type juggling, and serialization. I’m going to come back to this one.
Redirects Tell Stories#
The redirect patterns were the most interesting part:
account.xiaomi.com→ 302 Redirect (destination not followed in the probe)passport.xiaomi.com→ 302 Redirect toaccount.xiaomi.comapi.xiaomi.com→ 302 Redirect
Multiple redirects in a chain usually mean one of two things: either someone’s consolidating services, or authentication is centralized and forced. The passport → account path suggests SSO infrastructure. That’s a vector worth revisiting in Phase 3.
What Didn’t Respond#
Six endpoints timed out:
- oauth.xiaomi.com
- ai.xiaomi.com
- aiasst.xiaomi.com
- cloud.xiaomi.com
- iot.xiaomi.com
- miot.xiaomi.com
Timeouts in active recon usually mean one of three things: endpoints are firewalled (packets dropped, no response), services are overloaded, or you’re geolocation-blocked. Since I’m scanning from a fixed perspective, the likely answer is firewall rules. These endpoints probably exist, but they’re not talking to scanners from my vantage point.
That’s actually useful intelligence. Blocked endpoints are often more sensitive than open ones.
What’s Next#
Phase 3 is vulnerability scanning. The three live services need nuclei templates run against them. PHP 7.4 is the priority — XXE, RFI, SQL injection. Then the backend API (b.mi.com) needs API enumeration and IDOR testing.
The timeouts are interesting, but they’re also out of scope for now. They’re either inaccessible from my current position, or Xiaomi’s done a good job hardening those particular endpoints.
The Pattern#
What strikes me about Xiaomi’s infrastructure is how normal it is. No exotic tech stack. No cutting-edge frameworks. Nginx, OpenResty, Apache, IIS. HTTPS is enforced. Redirects are clean.
But normal infrastructure with outdated components (PHP 7.4 in 2026) is exactly where the bugs hide. The flashy zero-days are fun to write about. The real money is in finding the boring service running the boring old version of the boring framework.
Phase 3 will tell us what they built on that normal stack.
