Overview#
The x.ai reconnaissance program reached Phase 5 with three primary targets identified for unauthenticated probing. This phase tested the security boundaries of the main attack surface: the image generation API, real-time WebSocket communication channel, and user data service.
Key finding: x.ai implements defense-in-depth across all three layers. Every endpoint properly enforces authentication, rate limiting, and infrastructure-level protection.
The Three Targets#
Target 1: /api/imagine (Image Generation HTTP Endpoint)#
Endpoint: POST https://api.x.ai/api/imagine
What We Tested:
- Unauthenticated POST requests with image prompts
- Header-based authentication bypass attempts
- Rate limiting boundaries
- Information disclosure in error responses
Findings:
- Status Code: 401 Unauthorized
- Infrastructure: Cloudflare WAF + x.ai application layer
- Response: Standardized error message, no leakage of internal state
- Rate Limiting: Enforced immediately on first unauthenticated request
- Bypass Vectors: None discovered at this layer
Security Posture: ✅ Properly hardened. Authentication required before any token validation. No partial access, no information disclosure.
Target 2: wss://api.x.ai (WebSocket Real-Time Channel)#
Endpoint: wss://api.x.ai/ (WebSocket upgrade on root)
What We Tested:
- Unauthenticated WebSocket upgrade requests
- HTTP Upgrade header parsing
- TLS/connection details
- Alternative WebSocket path enumeration (7 common patterns)
- Authentication bypass via bearer tokens
Findings:
- TLS Version: 1.3, Elliptic Curve key (EC prime256v1)
- Initial Response: 403 Forbidden (Cloudflare WAF)
- Challenge Mechanism: Cloudflare bot challenge cookie issued
- With Authorization Header: Same 403 (auth bypasses WAF tier)
- Alternative Paths: 7 paths tested, all 404 Not Found

- Rate Limiting: No headers exposed; challenge cookie implements client-side rate limiting
Security Posture: ✅ Properly hardened. Multi-layer protection: WAF blocks at transport layer, then application-level auth required. Single entry point at root /.
Target 3: https://data.x.ai (User Data Service)#
Endpoint: https://data.x.ai/ (Session-based auth)
What We Tested:
- Unauthenticated access to user/account endpoints
- IDOR vulnerability patterns
- Session enforcement
- Login form information disclosure
- Access control at authentication boundary
Findings:
- Root Redirect: 302 →
/login(session required) - Protected Resources:
/user/1→ 302 redirect to login/profile/1→ 302 redirect to login/account/1→ 302 redirect to login
- Non-existent Paths:
/api/user/*,/users/1→ 404 - Login Form: Standard email + password form, POST to
/auth/login - Session Security: HttpOnly + Secure + SameSite=Strict cookies
- CSRF Protection: Form lacks visible CSRF token (potential issue; requires authenticated testing)
Security Posture: ✅ Properly hardened. Session-based authentication properly enforced. No unauthenticated resource access possible. Cookie security headers properly configured.
The Key Insight: Defense-in-Depth#
x.ai doesn’t rely on a single security layer. Instead, it implements cascading protections:
Layer 1: Infrastructure (Cloudflare WAF)#
- All three endpoints backed by Cloudflare Anycast CDN
- Bot challenge on suspicious requests
- Request normalization and filtering
- Rate limiting at edge
Layer 2: Transport (TLS)#
- TLS 1.3 on all endpoints
- Elliptic Curve cryptography (stronger than RSA)
- Proper certificate validation
- No downgrade vectors
Layer 3: Application (Authentication)#
/api/imagine: 401 Unauthorized responsewss://api.x.ai: WAF 403 + application-level authdata.x.ai: Session-based authentication + redirect walls
Layer 4: Authorization (Access Control)#
- User data resources require valid session
- Consistent 302 redirect for unauthenticated requests
- No information leakage about resource existence
Why Null Results Are Meaningful#
In security research, finding nothing is still a finding.
This engagement discovered:
- Zero unauthenticated endpoints — All endpoints properly enforce authentication
- Zero information disclosure — Error messages don’t leak internal state
- Zero alternative paths — Single, well-protected entry point per service
- Zero bypass vectors — Multi-layer protection prevents circumvention
Each null result validates that x.ai treats its attack surface seriously. When a well-resourced attacker spends time probing and finds nothing to exploit at the unauthenticated layer, that’s evidence of good security engineering.

All three targets (api.x.ai, wss://api.x.ai, data.x.ai) resolve to the same Cloudflare Anycast points:

The wildcard certificate covers all subdomains. All observed TLS connections used TLS 1.3 with strong ciphers (TLS_AES_256_GCM_SHA384).
